Initiated by the internationally acclaimed theatre master Stan Lai, Huichang Theatre Village officially opened in January 2024. Nestled amidst the historic landscapes of Jiangxi Province, China, the village seamlessly integrates millennia-old architecture, ancestral Hakka mansions, and ancient city walls with unique natural theatres, welcoming global ensembles for year-round creative residencies and performances.

Since its inception, the village has welcomed over 12 million visitors and nearly 100 international theatre companies. It has staged Stan Lai’s signature masterpieces and recent works—including Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, The Village, River/Cloud, and Dreamwalk—while serving as a prestigious hub for world-class theatrical icons.

Visions of global masters come to life here: American avant-garde legends Robert Wilson and Travis Preston have completed creative residencies here, staging landmark productions of Hamletmachine and Hedda Gabler. The village has also presented acclaimed works by legendary directors and companies including Theodoros Terzopoulos, Robert Lepage, Pippo Delbonno, Poland’s Teatr Pieśń Kozła (Song of the Goat Theatre), the Sardinian Theatre, as well as premier groups like U-Theatre, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, and Theatre Ronin, etc.

Furthermore, over a dozen acclaimed international troupes, including France’s Les Rustines de l'ange, Demain on change tout, Quidams, Didier Théron, Compagnie Gratte-Ciel, and Switzerland’s Kinopan, have illuminated its outdoor spaces. As a cradle for theatrical incubation and talent development, Huichang Theatre Village has established a thriving, year-round performing arts ecosystem—a true theatrical utopia co-created by artists and audiences alike.
